Matthew Davison

Matthew is a landscape painter based in Devon, he teaches painting in acrylics and oils. After studying at Bradford School of art in the 1970’s, photography, printmaking and painting, he went into the television and film industry as Director of Photography, with awards for cinematography, photography, theatre & opera lighting design.
As an artist, his body of work started in 1978 with Elephant size screen prints, selected at in 2001 at Royal West of England Academy. He is representation by the Mayne Gallery in Kingsbridge
His painting workshops are friendly, inclusive and very popular. Painting and drawing in the surrounding countryside, going back into the large studio space to start working on paintings. At the end of the workshop his students go away with new knowledge and skills. After many years of making images as a cinematographer, looking through lenses, observing and creating light on set and stage, painting has re-invigorated the creative process for him “beyond the strictures of the camera. In painting I seek the pure joy and drama of landscape, it’s form and how it’s affected by light.”
“Atmosphere, imagination and expression are important to me in a painting. These elements become a transformation of memory and observation into a new thing, a painting with a life of it’s own. I often return to the same piece of landscape, and though familiar, it is always different. This observation defines the painting.”
