Sat 16th & Sun 17th £175

A Mindful approach to Life Drawing. Tutor Louise Banks

For this months weekend course we will be working in line and wash using water soluble art materials such as Inktense and graphite pencils along with compress charcoal. We will be exploring expressive line moving into tonal washes. The Saturday will start with short poses and an introduction to some experimental methods and materials. My approach is initially to focus on “mark making” rather than conventional drawing techniques as a way into the subject. The day will be shaped around exercises that encourage personal research and development and discourage the pursuit of perfection! “That way the fear of criticism, all that distracting stuff that goes on in our heads all the time about whether you’re any good or how pleased you are with something – it all goes away because you are too busy focusing.” Toby Mulligan artist. During the afternoon there will be a long pose and I will be providing guidance on simple methods of establishing scale and proportion.
On Sunday we will using charcoal. This day will be about bringing the 2 approaches together – our intuitive, emotional response with the more academic. The aim is to convey scale and proportion with out losing the flow.         Read more.

Mixed Media Drawing Course. Tutor Mary Ann Mackenzie

Drawing is one of those disciplines that we all want to learn but don’t know where to begin. There is a great deal of fear around making a mark on a clean white sheet of paper. This course is aimed at “letting go” of the expectation and exploring many other ways in, that free up your mark making and help you to see with a new and fresh approach. We use masses of “unorthodox” mark making tools to help connect the eye and hand to become more trustful of each other and ‘crowd out’  the critical voice of judgment. We try and become so busy that there isn’t time for it to get involved. . Read more.

Life Drawing. Tutor Louise Banks

The Saturday will start with short poses and an introduction to some experimental methods and materials. My approach is initially to focus on ‘mark making’ rather than conventional drawing techniques as a way in to the subject. The day will be shaped around exercises that encourage personal research and development and discourage the pursuit of perfection! We will be using Indian ink, ink washes and unconventional drawing tools. I came across a quote by contemporary artist Toby Mulligan who uses many of the same drawing methods that we will be applying: ” That way the fear of criticism, all that distracting stuff that goes on in our heads all the time about whether you’re any good or how pleased you are with something – it all goes away because you’re too busy focusing.” During the afternoon there will be one long pose and I will be providing guidance on simple methods of establishing scale and proportion.

Container Planting Day. Tutor Kate Tuke

From the smallest balconies to the largest of gardens there are opportunities to grow a wide variety of plants in containers of all shapes and sizes.
There are endless possibilities with containers; they can be used to extend the season of interest in areas of the garden which may otherwise have a spring or summer focus only. They allow you to grow plants that would not thrive in the soil of your garden, such as Azaleas and dwarf Rhododendrons in non- acidic locations or damp loving plants where the soil bakes dry. They can be used to enhance changes in height and lend a scene of scale.
From the formality of Topiary to cascading clematis, from the layered elegance of certain shrubs to a riotous jumble of tender perennials in high summer – there is something for everyone in container gardening. Many varieties of fruit, vegetables and herbs can also be successfully grown in pots, including vines, figs and peaches. Read more.

Have you ever wanted to try your hand at propagating, but don’t know where to begin? You may have seen plants in someone else’s garden that you admire, but don’t know where to source them? Perhaps you assume that you need specialist skills or equipment, or think that you don’t have the facilities needed? The truth is that some plants are very easy to root and it can be  enormously satisfying to watch your own plants grow to maturity.
The day will start with coffee, followed by a walk around the garden. Read more.

This course is aimed at "letting go" of the expectation and exploring many other ways in, that free up your mark making and help you to see with a new and fresh approach. We use masses of "unorthodox" mark making tools to help connect the eye and hand to become more trustful of each other and 'crowd out'  the critical voice of judgment. We try and become so busy that there isn't time for it to get involved. . On Sunday we will be using charcoal. This day will be about bringing the two approaches together – our intuitive, emotional response with the more academic. The aim is to convey scale and proportion without losing the flow. They can be used to enhance changes in height and lend a scene of scale. From the formality of Topiary to cascading clematis, from the layered elegance of certain shrubs to a riotous jumble of tender perennials in high summer - there is something for everyone in container gardening. Life Drawing Weekend

We will be starting with expressive line drawing in charcoal going onto using water soluble pencils and ink. Coloured line and wash methods will be introduced when we will explore water marks that help to depict the human form in a loose, fluid way.  Human proportions will be covered along with gestural drawing. Materials will be provided but please bring a large A2 pad of heavyweight drawing paper. An optional extra would be   to bring your own selection of primary colour Derwent Inktense pencils, although there will be some provided to use too.        Read more.
